The photographer snapped her own daughter and their family dog, which inspired her to take snaps of other children with their pets
She believes the bond is an important part of childhood that will teach us all to stay in touch with our inner child
Setia admitted she can sometimes wait for hours for the babies to fall asleep before taking the pictures
Setia now takes snaps of babies and pets whenever she travels around the world.
She believes the bond is an important part of childhood, and says that, as adults, animals can help us to stay in touch with their inner child.
‘I call it magical realism; the innocence and the magic of childhood is what I capture. I feel like every child needs a furry friend,’ she said.
‘There is a lot you can learn from having a furry being in your home but most importantly it keeps the child alive in you, no matter how old you grow. And it is that childhood that I project through all my work.’
She uses natural light and steps outside at a certain time of the day when the light is soft to take the snaps
The stunning photographs feature dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, ducklings and little chicks
She said sometimes the shoots can take a matter of minutes if the babies and animals are behaving
Sujata, who took the photographs with a Nikon D800, explained the process behind the images and the problems she can run into.
‘It is a very detailed process,’ she said.
‘Safety of both the children and their furry friends is most important. I make sure that the furry babies involved are pets of the family. Parents and an assistant are always by my side to always take care.
‘I sometimes wait for hours to let the baby go off to sleep naturally and then literally place their fur buddy around them.
Sujata is originally from Jaipur, India, and said her work has helped her adapt to a new country
The photographer says it has helped her find a new identity for herself in her new country
She said she wants ‘aith in magic and the magic of childhood’ to come through in her pictures
‘Appropriate use of natural light helps in creating the dreamy images that you see. I step outdoors at the times of the day when light is soft enough for me to shoot a good image.
‘It’s mostly about being patient and being good with babies and animals both. It is important to make sure none of them are stressed out so I need to be very quick with my shots.
‘Sometimes my shoot literally takes two minutes and sometimes I have to cancel all of it because the babies and or the animal are not happy being a part of it.’
Setia believes every child will benefit from having a special furry friend in their lives
Once she started taking pictures of her dog and daughter she said she was inundated with requests from clients for similar shoots
She said her work was ‘a window to the person I am and have become over time’
‘It came out at a time when I was feeling lost in a new country trying to find my identity. I feel removed from my comfort zone in my own country with my people and so my work is all about hope, about beauty and childhood memories.
‘I always tell my daughter “magic is real, believe in it” and that is exactly what I demonstrate through my work – a belief in magic and the magic of childhood.
