A baby boy found abandoned in a wheelie bin has been adopted by a loving family.
According to local media, baby Stefan was abandoned in a bag left in a trash bin in the northern Serbian capital Belgrade two months before being found by pensioner Slobodan Cvetkovic.
“At first I thought a cat was in the bin and I started moving the trash to let it out. Then I noticed that a sound was coming from a bag and I opened it. There was a newborn baby inside, it still had blood,” the resident told local media.
Shocked by this scene, he immediately ran to a nearby house, told his wife and called emergency services.
The boy was taken to the hospital and examined by doctors and found to be in healthy condition.
Meanwhile, authorities opened an investigation and found a foster family.
Police located the baby’s 33-year-old mother, who has been charged with attempted murder of a newborn and could face up to five years in prison, according to local media.
The defendant said she had “no plans to defend” herself in court because she now believed what she did was unthinkable, according to reports.
The woman has an older son who is now in the custody of his father until her trial is concluded.
Meanwhile, the Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Zoran Djordjevic has visited baby Stefan’s new foster home to make sure he is “adapting well to his nice surroundings”.
